The Department of Economic Cybernetics was founded in 2002 as a part of the Faculty of Economics of Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University.
The first head of the Department of Economic Cybernetics was Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Doctor of Economics, Professor Ivan Blahun. He is widely known for his scientific work in the area of mathematical modeling of complex economic systems.
2004 was a year when the department launched a recruitment of students on Economic Cybernetics speciality.
The need for specialists in this area could be explained not only by the challenges of the modern information society, but also by the spread of the traditions of the Ukrainian cybernetic school in Western Ukraine.
The same year, the first enrollment in post graduate school on the “Economic and Mathematical Modeling” speciality was provided. Nowadays this speciality is well known as “Mathematical Methods, Models and Information Technologies in Economics”. 2016 was a year of the first enrollment for doctoral studies for the degree of Doctor of Science has been conducted. During the existence of the department more than 50 candidates and 4 doctors of economic sciences have been prepared here. Graduate students work at the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University and other educational institutions, as well as at enterprises, organizations of various forms and ownership, public authorities and foreign business structures.
Since 2016, the Department of Economic Cybernetics has been training specialists in the specialty “Economics” (educational level – bachelor and master), educational programs “Economics” and “Economic Cybernetics”.
Graduates of the department successfully work in various spheres of economic activity. They could find themselves as economists-analysts in large manufacturing companies, analysts in banks and insurance companies, advertising agencies, tax inspection, heads of private firms, senior managers, financiers and university professors, project managers and business analysts.
Department members are highly qualified in the area of economic and mathematical modeling and information technologies.

Since 2017, the head of the Department is Doctor of Economics, Professor Lesia Dmytryshyn.
The department provides teaching of the following courses: mathematics for economists, computer science, optimization methods and models; econometrics; economic cybernetics; operation research in the economy; economic and mathematical modeling; prognostication of social and economical processes; economic risk; modeling of economic dynamics; system analysis; modeling of micro- and macroeconomic processes; simulation modeling; decision support systems; theory of random processes; modeling in financial management; modeling of system characteristics in economics; applied econometrics; mathematical methods in marketing; research methods; actuarial mathematics.
To help students, lectures of the department have prepared and published a great number of methodical manuals and recommendations.
Special attention is paid to professional and educational work with students. Students of the Department of Economic Cybernetics regularly take part in student scientific conferences, scholarship programs and competitions of scientific works.
Our students are winners of the All-Ukrainian competitions of student research papers, the scholarship program of the Pinchuk Foundation “Zavtra.UA”, the Cup of the Chairman of the NBU, the International competition Black Sea Science and other programs.
Students of the Department of Economic Cybernetics systematically participate and win the competition of the European Union ERASMUS +: scholarships for studying and short-term exchange and studied under this program at the universities of Romania (Iasi University named after A.I. Cusa) and France (University of Science and Technology Lille I).
Our students are very active in student government and public life, of the Faculty of Economics, Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University, as well as the city of Ivano-Frankivsk and Ukraine.
The scientific activity of the department is carried out within the research topic “Social and economical systems management modeling”
The main areas of research work are: mathematical modeling in the management of complex economic and financial systems, mathematical methods for forecasting economic systems, models of regional economy, modeling of sustainable development at different levels of the hierarchy, modeling of socio-economic development and economic security.
During the activity of the department its staff has prepared a number of monographs, more than 500 scientific articles in professional and foreign publications. Professors and Associate Professors of the department publish the results of their research in scientific publications registered in the databases Scopus and Web of Science.
The department publishes a collection of scientific papers “Modeling of the regional economy”. Scientific papers on topical issues of economic modeling, business economics, management, marketing and regional economy could be find there.
In order to improve the quality of scientific work and educational process, the Department of Economic Cybernetics cooperates with centers of university education and research institutions, in particular, with the Research Center for Industrial Development of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kharkiv), Institute for Regional Studies (Lviv), Black Sea Research Institute of Economics and Innovation (Odessa), with similar departments of Kyiv, Lviv, Chernivtsi, Zaporizhia National Universities, Kyiv, Ternopil, Kharkiv National Economic Universities.
